Kane-based state police say mechanical failure was the cause of a one-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon on the Gardeau Road in Norwich Township. Troopers said Lori Haynes of Austin was headed north when her Chevy Tahoe went off the road after rounding a right hand curve, struck a tree while going over an embankment, spun around counterclockwise and struck another tree with the passenger rear door before coming to rest. Police did not report if Haynes or her three passengers, ages 17, 14, and 6 were injured.

State police in two counties are continuing their investigation into a crash involving a vehicle which was reported stolen.  Todd Peterson of Kane told authorities his 1979 Jeep CJ-5 was stolen  between 7:30 Saturday  and Sunday at 4:30 a.m. while it was parked in the lot at the American Legion in Wilcox. The Jeep was found at about 4:30 a.m.on Route 321 near Kane  after it  rolled over onto the passenger side coming out of a left hand curve.  The unknown driver fled the scene.

The Northern Tier Cultural Alliance has been conducting a survey to inventory barns across the Northern Tier.  While there have been several responses, committee members say there are still many that are not yet documented.   If you have a barn and would be willing to complete a form and sendsome photos, please download a form from our website:www.ntculturalalliance.org or contact us at info@ntculturalalliance.org .
You  can also call Ruth Tonachel, Program Specialist (570-268-4093) or Kathy
Joyce at the PA North Country Artisan Center and Store  (570-268-5055) to
obtain a copy. If you are interested in volunteering to conduct surveys, please call or
email Ruth at info@ntculturalalliance.org.  Information collected will be archived with NTCA in Bradford County and alsoadded to other statewide inventories of historic barns if not already included.  A variety of types of barns are being selected for inclusion in a
self-guided driving tour brochure and a DVD.  Participation in the survey
does not commit one to being on the tour or DVD - no-one will be included
without their permission - but it does insure that documentation of your barn will be preserved for future scholars. This project is being funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and also in part by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council.

The IRS recently  sent out letters notifying taxpayers about the scheduled for mailing the economic stimulus checks. Anyone who files a 2007 tax return will automatically receive their check, however, there is a concern about those who do not normally file and income tax return, such as social security recipients, veterans, retired railroad employees etc. If they receive at least $3,000 per year in some form of income,  they will need to file a 1040A form in order to receive their check.  The effort to get the word out was discussed during yesterday’s meeting of the Potter County Commissioners.  Sherry Hoffman, the director of the county’s aging services, identified those who will need to file a short form.

Hoffman says the county’s senior center managers will be available to help seniors fill out the short form. And she adds, she has checked with area tax preparers who say they will provide the service for a small fee.

The Department of Environmental Protection and the Mid-Cameron Authority have agreed on a completion date for the authority's new sewage treatment plant in Emporium Borough, Cameron County, according to DEP Northcentral Regional Director Robert Yowell who said “we have agreed to extend the deadline for completion of the plant until
July 31, and we are confident that the authority will have the plant in
operation by that date A February 2003 legal agreement required the authority to complete construction on the treatment plant by Dec. 10, 2005, but because of financing problems, construction delays and design alterations, the authority did not issue a notice to proceed with construction until January 2007. The amended agreement announced today also requires the authority to pay a $15,900 civil penalty for several permit violations that occurred between June 2007 and January. The treatment plant improperly reportedan unpermitted sewage bypass, and then failed to correct it promptly.
The permitted discharges of treated sewage from the facility were also found to have excess levels of suspended solids, fecal coliform and other pollutants. The discharges entered the Driftwood branch of Sinnemahoning Creek. The authority will pay the fine to the Clean Water Fund in 13 installments ending in February 2009.

After some conflicting  information developed concerning funding for the Pennsylvania Lumber Museum here in Potter County, State Representative Martin Causer and Senator Joe Scarnati yesterday announced that the $5.4 million in state funding for an expansion project will be released.  Rep. Causer said the money has been in the works for three years and he’s glad Governor Rendell has okayed the release.  The money will go toward the expansion of the museum’s exhibits and its visitor center to supplement existing attractions such as the 1912 Shay-geared logging locomotive, Barnhart log loader, Brookville locomotive and restored CCC cabin. Causer had reported last week that the Governor had indicated at a public gathering that the money would soon be released but when questioned about it, the Governor’s office said that wasn’t the case.  Causer said yesterday that the announcement is outstanding news for not only Potter County but the entire region adding, “the lumber industry is not only an important part of our history—it also has a vital role to play in our future.” Sen. Scarnati agreed, saying “given the growing interest in our region as a tourist attraction, the investment in the Lumber Museum could not have come at a better time.  Just as the lumber industry continues to be an important contributor to the local economy, the tourism industry is increasingly generating jobs and investment in the region.” The lawmakers praised the work of county government and tourism leaders who have long supported the museum and especially the Lumber Museum Associates, who have been a driving force for the project. The Museum opens for the season on April 1.

Pennsylvania farmers who signed up for an eligible crop insurance policy by March 17 will receive an automatic premium reduction of up to $175 per policy, Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff said today. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Risk Management Agency will provide a premium reduction of up to $175 per non-catastrophic, or buy-up, crop policy for eligible Pennsylvania producers, thanks to an estimated $4 million in additional funds that were made available to 15 states through a crop insurance assistance package.  Pennsylvania’s share is approximately $1 million, or 25 percent of total assistance. Pennsylvania farmers have already received $1.5 million in state crop insurance premium assistance for 2008, said Wolff. The premium reduction will be applied automatically to all eligible 2008 policies.  If the total producer-paid premium is less than $175, the amount of premium reduction will be capped at 100 percent of the producer premium due.  Producers will receive assistance for each eligible policy they hold.  Administrative fees will not be covered. For more information on Pennsylvania’s crop insurance program, call 717-705-9511 or visit www.agriculture.state.pa.us/cropinsurance.

The bus drops students off in the afternoon at the corner of East and maple Streets. Both of the stops are located on one-way sections of the official detour. The stops were added for walking students in order to make travel too and from the high school convenient and safe during the bridge project.  Pedestrians who must cross Mil Street are urged to do so at the one-way traffic section or beyond the detour route. Officials say they appreciate cooperation from pedestrians during the project.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is reporting  that hunters harvested an estimated 323,070 deer in the state's 2007-08 seasons.  That's down 11 percent from the previous seasons' harvest.  Hunters took 109,200 antlered deer in the 2007-08 seasons, down 19 percent from the previous license year's harvest of 135,290.  Also, hunters harvested 213,870 antlerless deer in 2007-08, a five percent drop from the 226,270 antlerless deer taken in 2006-07. Report cards sent in by hunters show the antlered deer harvest on the opening day, Nov. 26, dropped more than 50 percent from 2006. Daily harvests for the rest of the two-week season, Nov. 27-Dec. 8, were similar to 2006.The firearms season's opening day antlerless deer harvest also dropped nearly 50 percent from 2006.  However, the antlerless harvest throughout the remainder of the two-week season increased and, in due course, erased some of the opening day's harvest shortfall according to officials.
Based on past year's results, the Game Commission  notes that it wasn't surprising that the drop in opening day harvests had a larger effect on the antlered harvest than the antlerless harvest. Historically, a majority of the antlered deer harvest occurs on opening day, whereas the antlerless harvest is typically more evenly distributed across the entire two weeks. Total deer harvest estimates by WMU in the WFRM listening area  for 2007-08 (with 2006-07 figures in parentheses) are as follows: WMU 2F: 4,800 (7,200) antlered, 7,100 (8,000) antlerless; WMU 2G: 5,100 (7,200) antlered, 6,600 (4,600) antlerless;WMU 3A: 3,400 (4,500) antlered, 7,800 (8,800) antlerless.

A victim told police the cooler belonged to her.  Then, on July 6, Dailey was arrested on a charge of furnishing alcohol to minors. Shinglehouse police observed Dailey, who was only 20 years old at the time,  and others drinking beer at his home on Maple Street. The impact propelled the car causing it to fly across the road and lane nose first before rolling over onto the roof.  Troopers responding to the scene found Stout exhibiting signs of intoxication.  Chemical testing at Charles Cole Hospital confirmed a blood alcohol content of .11%, in excess of the legal limit for adults of .08%.

The new traffic pattern in Coudersport is now in effect while the Route 6/Mike Franklin Bridge near the Consistory is being replaced. Coudersport Borough police tell WFRM they are strictly enforcing the four new stop signs of Borie Street which have been placed there to assist with the additional detour traffic on Oak and Maple Streets.  All four of the stop signs have flashing red lights to give further warning to local traffic not accustomed to stopping at those intersections.

Speaking of bridges, employees from Neumeyer Environmental Services of Pittsburgh were collecting soil samples from various locations today around the PennDot Bridge in Driftwood. On March 10, PennDot workers discovered a strong order when the soil was disturbed near the bridge. PennDot immediately stopped digging and closed the location until samples could be obtained and analyzed. While the material in question is not believed to be hazardous, workers will be wearing personal protective equipment while obtaining the samples to comply with OSHA regulations.  Department of Environmental Protection staff were there to monitor the collection of soil samples.

PennDot has asked WFRM to let motorists, especially local residents know, that traffic patterns have changed in Coudersport to accommodate the detour necessitated by the reconstruction of the Route 6/Mike Franklin Bridge near the consistory. Although Route 6 remains open today, officials anticipate the bridge will be closed starting Wednesday if materials are received. During the project, Oak and Maple Streets have become one way at Mill Street. Oak runs westbound and Maple runs eastbound.  A number of new stop signs have been erected on Borie Street and motorists are advised to observe them. In fact, Coudersport Borough Police Chief Lee Gross has asked WFRM to remind  drivers to pay strict attention to the new stop signs and flashing lights in order to prevent collisions. PennDot anticipates the project will be completed in mid-August.

Meanwhile, the Liberty Township supervisors n McKean County, have apparently reversed their plans to close the Brooklynside Road to all through traffic. According to a report in today’s Bradford Era, Port Allegany contractor Brad Greenman donated equipment Monday to repair the damaged road surface which was then filled with limestone.  The road has taken a beating since PennDot closed Route 6 near the Pittsburgh Corning Plant to replace two bridges. The official detour takes motorists over Route 155 to the Larabee Y then on route 446 and 46 to Farmers Valley to Smethport. But local motorists know the detour over the Brooklynside road is about 7 miles shorter. According to the newspaper report, Rep. Martin Causer attended yesterday’s special meeting of the Liberty Township supervisors and expressed optimism that the township would get state funding to repave the local road and that the repaving might begin as early next month as soon as the asphalt plant reopens.

Icy road conditions are blamed for a one-vehicle crash this morning on Route 6 in Hamlin Township, McKean County. State police said Kathleen Danielson of Mt. Jewett was headed east when her Ford Ranger slid off the road and struck a tree, then spun around clockwise before coming to rest in the eastbound lane.  Danielson was wearing a seatbelt and escaped injury. The State Police Fire Marshall is probing an arson which caused about $1 million in damage early Sunday morning in Kane.  Authorities say someone burglarized the 44’ x 160’ building on Biddle Street owned by B. Sloan Cornell of Marienville and then set the building on fire before 2:15 a.m. The building housed two steam locomotives, a diesel locomotive, a luxury passenger box car built in 1890 and restored in the 1930’s along with numerous locomotive parts and railroad related equipment. Cornell owned the Kinzua, Knox, Kane Railroad which took passengers across the historic Kinzua bridge which was destroyed by a tornado in the summer of 2003.  Even though the route was changed, interest fell off and the railroad apparently was not operational for the last couple of years.

Troopers at Kane say a known suspect ran into two vehicles parked at Jose’s Bar in Lewis run late Sunday night and struck a pedestrian who was treated at Bradford Regional Medical Center for a leg injury.  State police locally are probing a hit and run taking place between 3:00 and 4:15 p.m. Saturday on the West Branch of Fishing Creek. An unknown vehicle, possibly a red Ford, while headed north went off the road and struck a ditch about 3/10ths of a mile north of the Fishing Creek Road, struck a Dominion Gas marker and a wooden split rail fence on private property. The driver failed to report the crash to authorities or property owners and anyone who has any information about it is asked to call the Denton Hill Barracks at 274-8690.

John Cooley, 36,of Shinglehouse has been jailed in lieu of $1500 bail for violating a protection from abuse order.  A Galeton man has become the latest area victim of identity theft. State police say 62 year old Milton Thomas Shatto of Galeton noted three suspicious charges to his checking account while reviewing a recent bank statement and police have determined the charges were made without his knowledge or permission. The investigation is continuing.

Local residents will no doubt be using more gasoline getting around town over the next few months as a detour went into place earlier today as work gets underway to replace the Route 6/Mike Franklin Bridge over the Allegheny River near the Coudersport Consistory. The detour uses Maple, Oak and Mill Streets. Oak Street is one-way westbound and Maple, one-way eastbound through the project which is expected to be completed by mid-August. Temporary signals and signs are in place directing traffic. A walkway will be maintained over the Allegheny while the bridge is being replaced.  A.L Blades & Sons, Inc. of Hornell is the  contractor for the $1.5 million project.

Fire of undetermined origin destroyed a Eulalia Township home late last night.  According to First Assistant Coudersport Chief Bryan Phelps, firefighters were summoned just after 11:00 p.m. to the home of Norton Cole on the Troupe Road and when the first firefighters arrived on the scene, flames were shooting through the roof. A third alarm was sounded bringing in tankers from Austin, Roulette, Shinglehouse, Ulysses and Port Allegany.  Tri-Town Fire Department from Ulysses provided an engine to stand by at the local hall.  Water was shuttled from Mill Creek about three miles from the house and Phelps said due to road and weather conditions, Coudersport’s Engine 48-3, a Four Wheel drive unit was the only engine able to access the burning structure and laid all 1200 feet of large diameter hose.  Some 45 volunteers responded and were on scene for about three hours. Phelps told WFRM the house was uninsured and the loss is estimated to be about $80,000. He said the Red Cross and local ministerium have stepped in the help Cole who is now staying at a relatives home.  Cole was not at home when flames were discovered by a neighbor.

A 21 year old Kane woman is being charged with failing to stay on roadways laned for traffic following a one-vehicle crash Wednesday on Route 210 in Lafayette Township, McKean County. State police said Jessica Heasley was in the fast lane when she attempted to pass another car on the three lane highway. Her Ford Focus went off the road, struck a guardrail and bounced back to the other side of the road, striking guardrails there before coming to rest on the west side of the highway. Heasley escaped injury,.

Ausherman must spend 10 years on supervised release after completing his prison term and he must also register as a sex offender. He was arrested in early 2007 after a neighbor told police he had seen child pornography and Ausherman’s computer. Investigators found multiple computer printed photographs, Cds, movies and images depicting child pornography in his home. In return for Ausherman’s guilty plea, a charge of possessing child pornography was dismissed.

Ol’ Man Winter just doesn’t want to give up.  Some four inches of snow fell in the WFRM listening area Tuesday afternoon through early today, and a round of freezing rain before the morning commute forced the delay in the start of classes for many area schools.  Galeton and Smethport School Districts cancelled classes for the day.  Slippery road conditions  no doubt were a factor in a multi-vehicle pile up on Route 6 near the Trout Brook Road in Roulette Township. State police closed that section of the road for a period of time and told WFRM there was “entrapment.”  Route 59 in McKean County was closed to traffic for several hours today  after a snowplow hit a utility pole and pulled down some electric wires.  The forecast for Thursday calls for a mix of clouds and sun and a high in the 30s.  But forecasters already are advising that a n’oreaster may be headed our way late this coming weekend.

A Smethport woman received minor injuries Tuesday afternoon when her car overturned on Route 6 about a mile west of Coudersport .State police said Brenda Young was headed east when her Nissan Murano went out of control on the snow-covered highway. When Young tried to regain control, the car went off the road, struck an embankment and rolled over onto the passenger side. She was taken to Charles Cole Hospital by Coudersport Volunteer Ambulance. Police say she is being charged with failing to drive at a safe speed.

No one was hurt in a three-vehicle crash Tuesday morning on the Hickox-Ulysses Road in Bingham Township. According to Coudersport-based state police  19 year old Brett Nichols of Ulysses was traveling north too fast for road conditions when his Ford Ranger slid out of control on a right curve. Nichols abruptly steered to the left to avoid another vehicle which was stopped in his lane preparing to turn left and struck a southbound Dodge Ram driven by Walter Hewitt of Genesee. The Nichols pickup went off the road, crossed a ditch and struck the right side of a Chevy S-10 operated by Turner Polen of Genesee which was stopped in a private drive waiting to enter the highway. Nichols is being cited for failing to drive at a safe speed and failing to stay in roadways laned for traffic.

DUI charges are pending against 22 year old Gregory Rees of Austin following a couple of crashes early Sunday morning in Portage Township. Authorities say Rees’s Ford Ranger went off the road and hit a porch at a house located at 32 Stiner Street, Austin. Rees then allegedly fled the scene, northbound on route 872 where the truck hit a section of guardrail.  Rees continued on for a couple of miles until his truck went off the side of the road, traveled down a 10 foot embankment, and became stuck.  Rees apparently left the scene but was later located and placed under arrest.  He was not injured in any of the mishaps.

In recent Potter County Court action, 53 year old David Bedelyon of Ulysses was ordered to spend 18 months on probation for theft , pay a $250 fine; and make full restitution to PennDot. According to Potter County District Attorney Dawn Fink, while employed by PennDot, Bedelyon helped himself to welding rods, 80 gallons of diesel fuel and various other vehicle maintenance products valued at a total of $1900 stored at the Genesee stockpile.

Today’s frigid temperatures and dangerous wind chill levels, thanks to an Alberta Clipper caused a two-hour delay in the start of classes at many area schools. Potter County Senior Centers were closed and seniors receiving home-delivered meals were advised to use their “Blizzard Boxes.”  EMA weather observer Tony Pierotti told WFRM that the wind chill at 7:00 a.m. was -18 degrees. As if that’s not enough, Mother Nature has some more winter weather for us. The National Weather Service has posted a winter storm watch for the WFRM listening area from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning.  A storm system will bring snow back into the area Tuesday with several inches accumulation possible through early Wednesday morning.  The snow may briefly mix with sleet and freezing rain Tuesday night.  A winter storm watch means there is a potential for significant snow or ice accumulation that may impact travel.  The exact path of the system is uncertain, however if snow or ice becomes imminent, the National Weather Service will issue a winter storm warning.

DUI charges are being filed against a Whitesville, NY driver following a crash early Saturday morning in Genesee. Daniel Ordway, 27, was turning south from Academy Street onto the West Bingham Road when he allegedly swerved to avoid another vehicle and allowed his Ford truck to go off the road and hit a sign where he encountered state police who placed him under arrest for driving while intoxicated.

Jewett.  Kio was taken to Charles Cole hospital for treatment of minor injuries.  McDonald is being cited for speeding.
